Who are the Lords of the Pit?

The Lords of the Pit are the United States’ premiere Old School Magic: the Gathering club based out of Chicago, IL. Members of this group include current club members (“Lords”) as well as prospective new members (“Thrulls”).

Membership in the Lords of the Pit is based on active involvement in our events and contributions to our cause – the proliferation of Old School MTG in the United States, improving the world through the club’s charitable contributions and community service, and fierce representation of our club.

What is Old School?

A subset of a children’s card game adapted for an aging demographic.

What’s up with the charity donations at your events?

We are not in this for EV. We believe that giving back to the community is important which is why, instead of tournament entry fees, we ask players to donate to a different charity for each event. In the past we’ve donated proceeds organizations like UCS, CPLF, and CCOFL.

Are your events sanctioned?

Never. Ever.

Ok, how do I get started with Old School?

Check out the 93/94 rules and start building a deck. Proxies are totally fine. For best results, start with the cards that gave you the most joy from your childhood. Next, get in contact with a club near you to be invited to the next meet up!

Do I need power to enjoy Old School?

I’m new to Old School; will I be welcome at your next meetup?

Absolutely. Old School is about community, camaraderie, and 25-year-old cardboard. We believe that the more people involved in the Old School scene the better!

Wait, what is Middle School MTG?

Middle School is the logical next step after Old School utilizing sets from 1995 through 2003. This new and growing format offers a retrospective MTG experience with near-limitless brewing potential. A detailed introduction is available here.
